Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the option to question specific calls from the official, echoing the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
