The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like standard physical horror, but within Together resides a intense examination about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
