Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
